FRISCO, Texas — Working from their training base in Frisco, the Dallas Cowboys reshaped the edge group Saturday by moving rookie pass rusher Malachi Lawrence to injured reserve because of a high ankle sprain and clearing room for Marist Liufau ahead of Sunday’s visit to Indianapolis.
Lawrence twisted the ankle in the club’s 33-30 overtime setback against Arizona last week, after coaches had been giving him a larger share of defensive snaps. He is likely to miss no fewer than four contests, beginning Sunday. His only sack this season came in Week 5, a 24-16 setback versus the Buccaneers.
Liufau had been stashed on the reserve list with a return window after fracturing a forearm during the exhibition finale. Because the injury happened then, Dallas could leave him off the 53-man roster on cutdown day. He came out of Notre Dame as an off-ball linebacker; over the spring and summer the staff tried him as an edge defender, and he is now grouped with the outside linebackers.
The club also called up Hudson, who plays receiver, and Mitchell, who plays tight end, off the taxi squad for Sunday. Bullard, a defensive tackle nursing a calf problem that started in the Ravens game, remains on the reserve list and will not dress against the Colts. Schoonmaker, a tight end, is questionable with a groin issue, and Mitchell’s promotion makes it probable he sits another week.
Dallas is 3-5 heading into a meeting with Indianapolis, which sits at 2-6. Lawrence was selected in the first round, and the roster is short on leftover return slots from injured reserve.
