Deep Ellum Shooting Suspect Faces Federal Gun Charge in Dallas

DALLAS, Texas — A man accused of firing into a Halloween weekend crowd in the Deep Ellum district of Dallas and wounding seven people now faces a federal gun charge on top of seven state counts. The U.S. Attorney’s Office made the federal case public Thursday.

A federal complaint accuses David Dashaun Yancy of unlawfully holding a gun and ammunition after an earlier felony conviction. The Dallas Police Department filed seven first-degree felony counts against him, each one aggravated assault tied to a mass shooting. Yancy turned himself in to Dallas police on Nov. 4, after the department released his image, and he remains in custody.

Officers answered a gunfire call on Main Street at about 1 a.m. on Nov. 1, a Sunday, and found seven people shot. None of the injuries was considered life-threatening. Investigators recovered 11 spent 9mm casings, and court records say security video shows a man drawing a pistol from his waistband before shooting in several directions into the crowd.

Records show a prior Dallas County felony conviction, and he was on deferred adjudication probation in a child endangerment case with an active warrant for violating it. The federal count carries up to 15 years in prison. A complaint is an accusation, not proof of guilt.

U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould said investigators are looking at whether anyone else was involved. He has not been charged in the two other Deep Ellum shootings that night; detectives are still working those cases. Across the three scenes, four people died and 15 were hurt.

The case is among the first under Operation Deep Cover, a joint push by federal, state and Dallas agencies against violent crime in the entertainment district that started Nov. 2. Dallas police say more Deep Ellum streets will be closed this weekend, and officers will not let crowds linger in parking lots.
