Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Owner Takes Rock Band to Court

Office tower against blue sky

DALLAS, Texas — The Dallas company that owns the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders brand is fighting to keep its famous blue-and-white uniform off a rock concert stage, taking My Chemical Romance and promoter Live Nation to court.

Pro Silver Star Ltd. has asked for a temporary restraining order and an injunction that would bar the band from putting performers in copies of the outfit at future shows. The company says the band ignored an earlier cease-and-desist letter.

The dispute traces to Oct. 21, the opening night of the band’s five-night run at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. During the song Teenagers, backup dancers dressed like the cheerleaders came on stage, went through a dance routine and then grabbed cardboard prop rifles for a staged shootout in which they rescued singer Gerard Way from masked gunmen. The bit is part of the show’s storyline about a fictional authoritarian regime.

In its filings, the company argues the routine hurt the brand and its reputation and fooled concertgoers and social media users into thinking the real squad was part of the show. It also says it has no quarrel with the band’s music or message, only with the uniform.

The band and Live Nation had not commented publicly.

In a court statement, the company said the costume options open to the band are practically endless, and that it is not asking for any change to the set list, the story the show tells or the choreography, only that dancers wear something else.

The legal fight lands at a busy time for the squad. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders recently announced they have unionized and are getting ready to bargain collectively over pay and working conditions.
