Waymo is set to launch its autonomous robotaxi service in Dallas, marking a significant expansion for the company. The initiative includes a partnership with Avis Budget Group for fleet management. Waymo will test its Jaguar I-PACE vehicles, enabling passengers to hail driverless rides via the Waymo app. With further plans for Miami and Washington, D.C., this move demonstrates Waymo’s strategy to broaden its service into new urban areas amid growing competition in the autonomous vehicle market.
Dallas – Waymo has announced plans to launch its autonomous robotaxi service in Dallas next year, marking a significant expansion of its operations. The initiative comes amid intensifying competition in the robotaxi market, most notably from Tesla, and signifies a strategic step for Waymo to broaden its reach in new cities.
To facilitate its Dallas expansion, Waymo has formed a partnership with Avis Budget Group, which will manage the robotaxi fleet in the city. This collaboration will enable Avis to provide comprehensive fleet management services, including the necessary infrastructure, vehicle readiness, maintenance, and depot operations. As a result, Waymo anticipates that this partnership will accelerate its ability to scale operations in new markets more effectively.
Waymo is currently conducting tests in downtown Dallas using its Jaguar I-PACE electric vehicles, which are integrated with the advanced Waymo Driver system. Upon launch, passengers will have the ability to hail driverless rides through the Waymo app, enhancing the convenience of the service.
In addition to Dallas, Waymo has plans for further expansion into Miami and Washington, D.C., in 2026. This is part of a broader strategy to establish its presence in multiple urban areas. The company is already operational in several cities, including Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco, where it has conducted over 250,000 paid trips weekly. Waymo’s vehicles have autonomously traveled more than 100 million miles on public roads, illustrating its advancements in autonomous technology.
The robotaxi service will operate with vehicles designed for level 4 driverless operations, indicating that they can handle most driving situations without human intervention. Other competitors in the robotaxi domain include Amazon’s Zoox and various startups such as Nuro and May Mobility, signaling the heat of competition in this emerging market.
In cities like Austin and Atlanta, Waymo has partnered with Uber for fleet management, while in Phoenix and Miami, the management responsibility falls to Moove. This highlights a strategic approach to leverage local expertise in fleet operations as Waymo expands its service area.
