Recent STAAR test results from Texas education agencies highlight significant academic improvements in reading and math for students in grades 3-8. The results indicate progress compared to pre-pandemic performance, with various districts, including Dallas and Fort Worth, reporting increases in the percentage of students meeting grade-level benchmarks. Education leaders emphasize the importance of strategic supports and curriculum innovations, aiming to address ongoing challenges in certain subjects while celebrating overall growth in student achievements.

Dallas – Recent spring STAAR test results released by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) reveal promising gains in reading and math for students in grades 3-8 across the state of Texas. The outcomes reflect significant improvements compared to the pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels, indicating a positive trend in academic recovery.

Statewide, results showed that a substantial number of students met grade level in reading, with 49% of third graders, 52% of fourth graders, 57% of fifth graders, 54% of sixth graders, 52% of seventh graders, and 56% of eighth graders achieving this benchmark. Notably, the percentage of fifth-grade students meeting grade level in reading rose by 4% from the previous year. In contrast, grades 3 and 4 experienced a 3% increase, while eighth-grade students reflected a 2% increase. Scores for grades 6 and 7 showed stability compared to the previous academic year.

In terms of math, performance varied across grades, with notable gains particularly in grades 3 and 8. Statewide statistics revealed that 44% of third graders, 45% of fourth and fifth graders, and 45% of eighth graders met grade level. These results illustrate a significant achievement for Texas students.

The Dallas Independent School District (DISD) reported that 47% of its third graders met the reading grade level, marking an increase from 42% last year. The data for other grades showed 52% of fourth graders, 57% of fifth graders, 48% of sixth graders, 47% of seventh graders, and 51% of eighth graders meeting reading benchmarks. In terms of math, DISD saw a modest improvement, with 42% of third graders meeting grade level compared to 35% last year. Fourth graders achieved 45%, fifth graders 46%, sixth graders 32%, seventh graders 7%, and eighth graders 39% at grade level.

Meanwhile, the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) demonstrated improvements in both reading and math, although performance remained below statewide averages. According to the results, 41% of FWISD third graders met reading grade level, which is an increase from 33% last year. Additional results included 41% of fourth graders, 46% of fifth graders, 38% of sixth graders, 35% of seventh graders, and 26% of eighth graders reaching grade level in reading. For math, 34% of FWISD third graders met grade level, reflecting growth from 29% last year, with other grades recording 37% for fourth graders, 34% for fifth graders, 17% for sixth graders, 5% for seventh graders, and 31% for eighth graders.

According to Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath, these test results signify ongoing academic recovery made possible through strategic supports implemented over recent years. DISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde acknowledged the district’s focused strategies, including a completed year of new curriculum implementation and an added emphasis on early learning opportunities, which contributed to these positive outcomes.

However, concerns about the STAAR testing emerged, particularly regarding the grading of essay-style responses, which resulted in a striking percentage of zeros. Elizalde indicated a commitment to continuous improvement efforts and addressing inconsistencies in performance across specific subjects, especially seventh-grade math.

Both DISD and FWISD are concentrating on expanding literacy initiatives and incorporating effective instructional strategies to build upon the recent growth in academic performance. As education leaders work to refine their approaches, the focus remains on enhancing student achievements and ensuring long-term success in Texas schools.
