The crash caused significant disruption on the highway, leading to the closure of all southbound lanes from Avenue J to Randol Mill Road for several hours while police conducted an investigation and crews worked to clear the scene. Shortly after 5:10 a.m., a driver of a Ford Ranger reported hitting something on the highway, which investigators believe was the pedestrian. When police arrived, they found the man in the main lanes of traffic. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
