AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward’s University rugby team closed out its season on February 15 with a loss to the University of Dallas during its final conference match at Huns Rugby Ranch. The Hilltoppers finished the Lone Star Conference with a 0-5 record, placing last in the standings.

This match, originally scheduled for November 16, was postponed due to a lack of available players. Despite favorable weather conditions on the day of the rescheduled game, attendance was low, resulting in sparse crowds supporting both teams.

In the first half, St. Edward’s showcased strong ball control, effectively employing a ruck strategy to maintain possession. However, the University of Dallas proved to be a formidable opponent, scoring three tries during the half. The standout moment for the Hilltoppers came when flanker James Williams secured a dramatic try, contributing to a competitive score of 21-15 in favor of the University of Dallas at halftime. This tally included two tries and a penalty kick by the opposing team.

During the first half, St. Edward’s captain Remigio Vitores sustained an injury to his right arm, resulting in his removal from the match. His absence would prove challenging for the team as they moved into the second half of play.

The second half continued with both teams exchanging possession of the ball but with the University of Dallas taking the lead again with additional scoring. Play was frequently interrupted by referee calls, which appeared to favor the University of Dallas. While St. Edward’s attempted several strategic plays, including a notable field-traversing kick from Vitores before his injury, they could not diminish their opponent’s momentum.

The University of Dallas capitalized on the Hilltoppers’ struggles, scoring two more tries to solidify their victory, ultimately concluding the match without any further scores from St. Edward’s.

This match against the University of Dallas marked the last traditional “15” game of the season for St. Edward’s. The team will now transition to friendly matches against other schools, as they move away from formal conference games.

This season has been a learning experience for the Hilltoppers, highlighted by resilience despite the challenging outcomes. The team’s focus will now shift towards building skills and teaming chemistry in preparation for the upcoming friendly competitions.

As the rugby season concludes, both players and coaching staff will assess the season’s performance and strategize for future engagements, aiming to enhance their approach and improve upon the challenges faced throughout this conference year.
