Dallas, Texas — Phillip Gene Hudson, a beloved community leader, dedicated family man, and esteemed minister, passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and service. Born on January 26, 1945, Phillip was known for his larger-than-life presence that inspired countless individuals. As a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, his life revolved around family gatherings filled with laughter, music, and shared memories.

Phillip was recognized for his beautiful singing voice and infectious laughter, traits that remained cherished even as his health began to decline later in life. He often referred to younger family members as “children of the promise,” a phrase that carried significance due to a familial legacy established by his grandfather, Rev. William Curtis Mansfield. His family gatherings were characterized by his watchful smile and evident joy in the togetherness shared with loved ones.

A passionate sports enthusiast, Phillip served as the president of a national championship Little League baseball team in Gary, Indiana, and played a crucial role in establishing the first girls Little League softball team in the area. He actively followed football, basketball, baseball, and tennis, affectionately referring to tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams as “his girls.” Phillip was also an avid bowler in Dallas, where he won numerous trophies, showcasing his competitive spirit and love for sports.

Phillip was not only a sports fan but also an avid movie buff, music lover, and game enthusiast. He enjoyed playing games like Scrabble, Bid Whist, and Gin Rummy, and held a firm belief in the power of music. Saturdays often found him playing jazz during family cleaning sessions, a rhythm that added joy to routine tasks. He dreamed of his children forming a church band to perform while he preached, an aspiration realized by his grandchildren in later years.

Educated in Indianapolis public schools, Phillip graduated from Shortridge High School before pursuing higher education. His journey led him to Texas, where he attended Bishop College on a scholarship with his first wife, Jewel Hudson, and their three daughters. He achieved Dean’s List status and became a leader in various campus activities, including serving as president of the freshman class and participating in the choir and student newspaper. Phillip earned a bachelor’s degree in religion, along with two master’s degrees in theology and public administration from Southern Methodist University (SMU).

After more than 20 years as a United Methodist minister in the North Texas Conference, Phillip also served as a chaplain at two hospitals in Dallas. Parallel to his ministry, he worked for the City of Dallas while pursuing his academic qualifications, eventually holding an administrative position within the Fort Worth Independent School District. Upon retirement from both the church and the school district, he continued to serve the community at Highland Hills United Methodist Church, often participating on the pastoral team.

Phillip was deeply involved in community organizations, proudly holding membership in Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and the Prince Hall Freemasonry. His contributions to both local and church communities were profound, fostering connections and supporting numerous individuals over the years.

In his passing, Phillip is survived by his loving wife, Marie Hudson, and his four daughters: Angela Marie Hudson, Kimberly Dean, Jennifer Rae Hudson, and Melanie Hudson Harper. Additionally, he leaves behind a proud legacy as a grandfather of ten grandchildren and an astonishing eighteen great-grandchildren. He is remembered fondly by his surviving sisters, aunts, uncle, and extensive family for his love, laughter, and genuine spirit of support.

The community mourns the loss of Phillip Gene Hudson, celebrating a life dedicated to faith, family, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. His memory will live on through the many lives he touched and the significant impact he made in his community.
