Dallas – A new initiative aimed at improving nutrition security for families has been launched at Jack Lowe Sr. Elementary School. The Good For You Healthy Hub, developed by Texas Health Resources with financial support from TDIndustries and the Jack Lowe family, seeks to provide no-cost fresh produce and staple items to students and their families in the Dallas area.
The Healthy Hub operates by serving between 70 to 150 families per session, allowing participants to select groceries in a setting similar to a traditional market. Families can choose the items they need, which include fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as other healthy product options.
In addition to providing groceries, the initiative also includes valuable resources for families such as recipe cards and nutrition education workshops. These tools are designed to help families make the most of the fresh produce available to them, thereby promoting balanced nutrition and healthier eating habits.
TDIndustries and the Lowe family have committed to supporting the Good For You Healthy Hub financially for a duration of five years. This ongoing commitment is aimed at ensuring that all 150 families at Jack Lowe Sr. Elementary School can benefit from these resources on a weekly basis.
The launch of the Healthy Hub also pays tribute to the legacy of Jack Lowe Sr., who played a significant role in the integration of the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) during the 1970s. The initiative recognizes his contributions and aims to serve diverse communities in the area.
School Principal Crystal Cavitt emphasized the pressing need for access to healthy foods among the school’s diverse student body, which communicates in over 17 languages and represents more than 20 countries. This diversity highlights the importance of providing accessible nutrition resources to better serve the school community.
Since its inception in 2020, Texas Health Resources has expanded the Good For You Healthy Hub program across North Texas. To date, they have established 21 hubs and have successfully distributed nearly 1.27 million pounds of produce, assisting nearly 265,000 individuals in the region.
Other initiatives by Texas Health for the school include the refurbishment of the playground, the organization of a Scholastic Book Fair, and the creation of a learning garden. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance the well-being and educational experience for students in the Dallas area.
Texas Health stresses that improving nutrition security is a vital aspect of promoting community well-being. The collaboration with organizations such as TDIndustries and the Dallas Independent School District illustrates a commitment to addressing food insecurity challenges faced by families and fostering healthier lifestyles.
