Fort Worth, Texas – Severe weather is anticipated across North and Central Texas, beginning Tuesday evening, as a tornado watch and flash flood warnings are in effect for several counties. Drier conditions are projected to follow by the weekend, where temperatures may rise to as high as 100 degrees.
A tornado watch is currently issued for around 20 counties, including major areas such as San Antonio and Austin, lasting until 10 p.m. on Monday night. Meteorologists predict the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and large hail. Residents within the tornado watch area are advised to stay vigilant and have a designated safe location prepared in case a tornado warning is declared.
In addition, a flash flood warning covering counties like Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, and Hays remains in effect until 3 a.m. on Tuesday. Recent rainfall has already reached up to 2 inches in certain areas, with expectations for an additional 1-3 inches of rain. This accumulation significantly raises the possibility of flooding in low-lying regions.
In lighter news, the Fort Worth Zoo is celebrating the birth of a new baby porcupine, affectionately known as a porcupette. The young porcupette was born on May 17 to proud parents Piper and Quilliam, marking another success for the zoo’s animal care programs.
Meanwhile, Opal Lee, known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” has been hospitalized at the age of 98. Lee expressed her appreciation for the overwhelming support she has received through her social media channels, highlighting the community’s concern and affection during her hospitalization.
In other noteworthy happenings, the recent conclusion of the 89th Texas Legislature’s regular session has left significant decisions pending for Governor Greg Abbott, who has 20 days following June 2 to either sign or veto bills, including a pending THC ban.
Pride Month has also begun, bringing with it worldwide celebrations of LGBTQ+ culture and rights. This timely acknowledgment coincides with the heightened visibility and advocacy during this annual observance.
As the region braces for inclement weather, residents are encouraged to prepare for the potential impacts of severe storms and monitor local weather updates. With the dual occurrences of natural phenomena and community events, North Texas has a dynamic week ahead.
