The aftermath of severe storms in North Texas with heavy rain and flooding.
North Texas is currently facing severe storms that have resulted in heavy rain, strong winds, and widespread power outages affecting over 20,000 customers. As storm conditions worsen, the area has experienced downed trees, flooded roads, and significant damage, particularly in Tarrant and Collin counties. Emergency services are responding to these incidents, while Oncor continues working to restore power. Residents are advised to remain cautious and informed as recovery efforts unfold.
North Texas is currently experiencing severe storms marked by heavy rain, lightning, and potential strong winds. On Friday, a WFAA Weather Alert Day was declared as the region braces for continued severe weather, which may bring hail and gusts exceeding 60 miles per hour.
As the storms intensified, power outages began to escalate. Initially, more than 1,500 customers were reported without electricity. However, by shortly before 3:30 p.m., that number rapidly surged to nearly 21,000 as the severe weather developed across the area. Oncor, the electrical utility provider, is actively monitoring and responding to these outages. Their website confirms that crews are working diligently to restore power as safely and swiftly as possible.
The recent severe weather has impacted various areas in the Metroplex, causing incidents such as downed trees, flooded roads, and damaged properties. A weather event earlier in the week had already heightened concerns, with warnings issued for flooding and tornadoes across multiple counties. The core counties in the Dallas-Fort Worth area faced widespread tornado watches, amplifying the need for residents to stay alert.
In Tarrant County, the storms resulted in a residential structure being struck by lightning, leading to visible smoke from the location. Meanwhile, flooding along the Trinity River has disrupted the annual Mayfest celebration, and there have been alarming reports of vehicles stalling in floodwaters in Saginaw. In Dallas County, over a dozen instances were recorded by Dallas Fire-Rescue concerning stalled cars, further indicating the severity of the storm’s impact.
The storm’s aftermath has also taken its toll on neighborhoods in Mesquite, particularly in the Meadowbrook Drive area, where significant damage has been reported. Residents described experiencing high winds and thunderstorms throughout the severe weather event. Collin County faced its challenges too, as a USPS mail truck was flipped over due to the combination of strong winds and rising water levels on roads.
Denton County has reported troubling flooding conditions, with several parking lots transforming into hazards for drivers. At the same time, ONCOR’s outage map during a previous storm indicated that over 6,000 homes and businesses were left without power. As of Tuesday, more than 335,000 power outages across various counties had already caused considerable disruptions, with Dallas County alone accounting for over 22,810 reported outages.
Power restoration efforts are ongoing, but Oncor has cautioned that in some affected areas, restoration may extend into subsequent days. Infrastructure damage has necessitated that certain power lines and equipment be rebuilt or replaced as part of the recovery process. Residents are reminded to exercise caution during this severe weather period by avoiding any downed power lines and reporting such hazards directly to emergency services by calling 911.
As the storms continue to impact North Texas, updates and alerts will be critical for community safety and recovery efforts. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the weather and any evolving circumstances that may affect their safety and power accessibility.
