Artists and their approaches

Frances Bagley

Frances Bagley is based in Dallas, Texas and has an extensive career spanning 40 years. Her practice addresses social issues relating to environment, architecture, and society, and her projects emphasize the connection between the body and perceptual space. Bagley is actively involved in supporting women’s and artists’ rights and has received awards including the 10th Kajima Sculpture Exhibition in Tokyo and recognition at the 2007 Texas Biennial. Her works are held in collections such as The Dallas Museum of Art, The National Museum of Women in Washington D.C., The El Paso Museum, and the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas, TX. Bagley has also received the Moss Chumley Artists Award from the Meadows Museum and the Legend Award from the Dallas Center for Contemporary Art. Her installation “Shangri-la” was featured in “The State-of-the-Art 2020” at Crystal Bridges Museum, with a site-specific reconfiguration planned for 2024 at Nasher Sculpture Center.

Tom Orr

Tom Orr is also based in Dallas and exhibits internationally. His sculpture work is recognized for creating vibrant optical patterns through formal traits, and his work focuses on experiential movement, enhancing the viewer’s engagement. Orr’s exhibition history includes installations in Japan and various locations in the U.S. His public art projects include installations at Dallas Ft. Worth Airport and Love Field Airport. He received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2011. This past spring, Orr hosted two simultaneous solo exhibitions in Dallas and created a site-specific installation called “Atlas” for the Nasher Sculpture Center. He has also shown large-scale works in exhibitions such as “In Balance”, which explored structure, balance, and space.

Shared history and public projects

Bagley and Orr maintain individual careers but have collaborated on several public and performance projects. They were commissioned to design sets and costumes for Verdi’s Nabucco for the Dallas Opera’s 50th Anniversary season. Their collaboration led to a museum installation at The Dallas Museum of Art for the Performance/Art exhibition. They also created the Wildlife Water Theater that remained at White Rock Lake for almost two decades. Another public installation, “Forest of Light,” featured 57 colorful steel poles and 23 LED poles and became a prominent feature at the UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Why this exhibition is notable

This presentation is a rare opportunity to see both artists’ work exhibited together and installed in close proximity. The planned adjacency of pieces is intended to highlight contrasts and affinities in material choices, scale, and strategies for engaging viewers in physical and perceptual experience.
