Traffic congestion on I-35E in Dallas due to accidents

News Summary

Multiple incidents on I-35E in Dallas have led to severe traffic delays and raised concerns about safety in the area. A fatal crash near Riverfront Boulevard closed all northbound lanes, while another collision involving an 18-wheeler and passenger vehicle occurred shortly after. Investigations are ongoing into these accidents, including a police pursuit incident earlier in the week that resulted in a civilian fatality. Drivers are warned to expect potential traffic disruptions.

Dallas – A fatal crash on Sunday morning resulted in the closure of all northbound lanes of I-35E near Riverfront Boulevard. The incident occurred around 11:18 a.m., prompting a swift response from officials who set up a perimeter to facilitate an investigation into the accident. As a result, traffic was severely impacted, causing delays that extended back to Illinois Avenue in north Oak Cliff.

The Dallas Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the severity of the situation in a press release, indicating that the highway was temporarily closed to allow for thorough investigation. The exact details of the crash, including the number of vehicles involved and any injuries sustained, have not yet been fully disclosed.

In a separate incident on the same highway early Monday morning, another accident occurred involving a collision between an 18-wheeler and a passenger vehicle around 5:30 a.m. A woman from the passenger vehicle was transported to the hospital following the crash, although her current condition remains unclear. Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesperson Jason Evans reported that traffic delays continued as emergency services responded to the scene, stretching congestion significantly.

By 9:15 a.m. on Monday, traffic conditions began to gradually improve, with congestion easing from 12th Street to Woodall Rogers Freeway, allowing some flow of vehicles to resume. Nonetheless, complications due to multiple incidents over successive days raised concerns regarding traffic safety and management in the area.

Earlier in the week, on Thursday, a separate and significantly alarming incident unfolded involving a police pursuit of a capital murder suspect. Authorities reported that the suspect crashed his vehicle during the chase on southbound I-35E near the Red Oak Road overpass around 10:30 a.m. Following the crash, officers engaged the suspect, who exited his vehicle brandishing a firearm. The standoff resulted in officers opening fire, injuring the suspect. Emergency medical teams provided first aid at the scene, and the suspect was subsequently hospitalized in unknown condition.

The crash involving the suspect also led to tragic consequences for another civilian. One individual in the vehicle struck by the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, while another was severely injured. Authorities have withheld additional details regarding the identities of the victims involved in this incident.

In response to the shooting and crash, the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) is currently investigating the officer-involved shooting. Concurrently, the Red Oak Police Department is responsible for examining the circumstances surrounding the crash itself. Despite the chaotic series of events, no police officers sustained injuries during the pursuit or the subsequent confrontation.

Drivers are cautioned to anticipate potential delays on I-35E due to these incidents, with initial warnings suggesting heavy traffic congestion could persist until after 6 p.m. on Thursday. Notably, by 4:15 p.m., one lane of the southbound highway had been reopened, with all southbound lanes eventually regaining access by 6 p.m. However, the southbound service road remained closed for ongoing investigations.

This series of accidents underscores the pressing concerns regarding traffic safety on one of Dallas’s busiest highways. Investigations into these incidents are ongoing, as authorities work to determine the particulars of each event and ensure the safety of motorists in the area.
