Grapevine, Texas – Arrests Made in Fatal Jet Ski Hit-and-Run Incident

An 18-year-old woman, Ava Moore, tragically lost her life after being struck by a jet ski while kayaking on Grapevine Lake during the Memorial Day weekend. The fatal incident occurred on Sunday, with Moore suffering from severe head trauma due to the collision.

The suspected driver of the jet ski, identified as 21-year-old Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez, was arrested on Tuesday. Alongside her, a second suspect, 21-year-old Maikel Coello Perozo, was taken into custody for allegedly assisting Gonzalez in fleeing the scene of the accident. Witnesses reported the jet ski being operated recklessly at high speeds close to the shoreline, endangering swimmers prior to the collision.

According to reports, after the incident, both suspects attempted to escape the scene in a vehicle, during which they struck two parked cars. The passenger on the jet ski remained on shore and has cooperated with authorities, with no charges filed against her at this time.

Both Gonzalez and Perozo are Venezuelan nationals who entered the United States illegally after crossing the southern border between 2023 and 2024. They now face serious legal repercussions for their alleged actions. Gonzalez is charged with second-degree felony manslaughter, reckless operation of a watercraft, excessive speed, and leaving the scene of an accident involving death. Perozo faces charges related to collision damages and hindering apprehension. While the specific bond amounts for both suspects are not fully clear, reports suggest that Gonzalez’s bond might be set at approximately $500,000.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities gathering more evidence that may lead to additional charges. The Texas Game Wardens and Grapevine Police Department are actively leading the inquiry, employing technology to recreate the crash and understand its circumstances better. Public assistance has been vital in this process, with law enforcement receiving over 900 tips that contributed to locating the suspects.

In a show of the seriousness with which this incident is being treated, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has expressed a desire for severe penalties against the suspects, stating that he is open to considering the death penalty in light of the tragic outcome of Ava Moore’s life.

Ava Moore was a promising cadet at the U.S. Air Force Preparatory School, with plans to join the U.S. Air Force Academy and pursue a bright future. The incident not only claimed a young life but has left a community in mourning. The Moore family has since released a statement expressing their appreciation for the overwhelming support received during this difficult time while requesting privacy as they navigate their grief.

The ongoing investigation continues to unfold, with authorities seeking justice for the loss of Ava Moore and aiming to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
