A fire on a DART train near the Pearl/Arts District Station caused significant disruptions to public transportation in Dallas. Fortunately, emergency responders managed a swift evacuation of the affected individuals, with no life-threatening injuries reported. The fire broke out while trains were in the downtown tunnel, prompting immediate action from DART to set up shuttle buses for displaced commuters. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, with repairs predicted to take time as safety measures are prioritized.
Dallas experienced a significant disruption in public transportation services on July 30, 2025, when a fire erupted on a DART train near the Pearl/Arts District Station. The incident, which occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m., led to the immediate suspension of DART rail service in Downtown Dallas.
The fire ignited in the trailing light rail vehicle of a train that was navigating through the downtown tunnel. At the time of the blaze, five other trains were also present in the tunnel, raising concerns about the safety of passengers and nearby individuals. Fortunately, the train containing the fire managed to stop just before fully entering the tunnel, allowing for an organized evacuation.
Emergency responders from Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived swiftly at the scene, assessing the situation and ensuring the safety of all individuals involved. A total of 40 people were safely evacuated from the train, which included 30 passengers and 10 individuals from the surrounding area. Although nine passengers received treatment for injuries on-site, and six were transported to a local hospital, thankfully, none of the injuries were deemed life-threatening. Evaluations indicated anxiety, breathing difficulties, and minor burns among those treated.
As the situation unfolded, DART set up shuttle buses to assist displaced passengers at various stations including Victory, EBJ/Union, West End, Akard, St. Paul, Pearl/Arts District, Deep Ellum, Cityplace/Uptown, and SMU/Mockingbird. This effort aimed to mitigate the inconvenience caused to commuters during the evening rush hour.
Firefighters deployed seven rescue units to evaluate passengers and manage the unfolding crisis effectively. Witness reports at the scene described flames, sparks, and significant smoke escaping from the tunnel, prompting swift evacuations. Amid the chaos, some passengers evacuated in a state of panic after hearing noise complaints likened to firecrackers or gunshots.
The direct cause of the fire is still under investigation; however, officials believe it to be accidental. DART has indicated that repairs to the affected rail line will be ongoing through the night. Additionally, the removal of the damaged train from the tunnel is necessary, alongside the restoration of electricity services along the DART lines in the Central Business District.
The incident significantly hampered transportation for DART rail passengers, particularly during the critical evening rush hour when many commuters rely on DART services. In response to the incident, traffic around the area was temporarily closed to vehicles to ensure the safety of emergency responders addressing the situation.
