A snapshot of the serious collision involving a Lyft and a TRE train in Dallas.
A devastating crash occurred involving a Lyft vehicle and a TRE train in Dallas, resulting in the deaths of both occupants of the Lyft. The incident, which took place near Market Center Boulevard and Harry Hines Boulevard, raised concerns about safety at railway crossings. Investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash that pushed the vehicle 150 yards down the tracks. Lyft has expressed condolences and is supporting the victims’ families during this difficult time.
A deadly crash occurred on Wednesday morning involving a Lyft vehicle and a Trinity Railway Express (TRE) train near Market Center Boulevard and Harry Hines Boulevard. The collision, which happened around 9:25 a.m., resulted in the deaths of both occupants of the Lyft vehicle. The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office identified one of the victims as Melissa Rose Campanella, aged 50. The identity of the male passenger remains unreleased.
According to reports, the force of the train struck the Lyft vehicle with such intensity that it was pushed approximately 150 yards down the track. Eyewitness accounts describe the wreckage as “unrecognizable,” highlighting the severity of the incident.
The Texas Department of Transportation has emphasized that it is illegal to cross train tracks when a train is visible or when the crossing gates are lowered. The area surrounding the crash site has raised concerns about safety, particularly after a subsequent observation where a pedestrian was seen crossing the same tracks while the warning lights and crossing arms were still active.
DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) officials confirmed that an investigation into the incident is ongoing but have not ascertained how long the Lyft vehicle had been on the tracks before the collision occurred. They also stated that both victims were pronounced deceased at the scene, and their families have been notified.
In a statement, Lyft expressed condolences for the victims and mentioned that they are working to connect with the victims’ families to offer support during this challenging time.
At the crash scene, a bent “Do Not Stop on Tracks” sign was discovered on the ground, which may indicate potential issues with railroad crossing safety in the area. Moreover, witnesses reported seeing multiple drivers attempting to bypass lowered crossing gates, further exacerbating the safety concerns at this railway crossing.
DART has warned TRE passengers to expect delays and to look for shuttle buses between Medical Market and Victory Stations as the investigation into the collision continues. Investigators remained on the scene for several hours to gather evidence and reconstruct the events leading up to the crash.
Train and vehicle collisions have been a recurrent issue across the U.S., often leading to tragic outcomes. Safety measures are in place to prevent such incidents, including the use of crossing gates, warning lights, and signage. However, violations of these safety protocols continue to pose risks to both drivers and pedestrians.
This incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to safety regulations at railroad crossings and raises ongoing questions about the effectiveness of current safety measures in preventing similar tragedies in the future.
