Dallas shooting investigation scene with police vehicles

News Summary

In a tragic incident in Old East Dallas, bounty hunter Rodney Brown and private investigator Jorge Moncivais have been charged with murder after a shooting that claimed the life of 33-year-old Drew Knowles. The confrontation occurred while executing a warrant, leading to multiple gunfire exchanges and Knowles ultimately crashing his vehicle. The situation has raised serious questions regarding the use of firearms in bounty hunting operations, prompting calls for accountability from local residents and advocacy groups as the investigation continues.

Dallas – Two individuals, identified as 43-year-old bounty hunter Rodney Brown and 23-year-old private investigator Jorge Moncivais, have been formally charged with murder following a fatal shooting incident in Old East Dallas. The shooting occurred on Thursday morning, leading to the death of 33-year-old Drew Knowles, whose family has been impacted by the tragedy and resides in Arkansas.

The shooting incident unfolded as Brown and Moncivais were executing a warrant associated with Knowles. Utilizing automated license plate readers, they were able to locate Knowles’ vehicle parked in the 2700 block of Florence Street. Upon discovering his car, the two men approached the scene, with Moncivais blocking Knowles’ vehicle in front and Brown positioning himself behind it.

In a tense exchange, Brown exited his vehicle brandishing a firearm just as Knowles attempted to escape by reversing into Brown’s car. This prompted both Brown and Moncivais to fire multiple rounds into Knowles’ vehicle as he made his getaway. Reports indicate that Knowles was struck in the right triceps and sustained two additional gunshot wounds to the right side of his upper back during the incident.

Despite the injuries, Knowles managed to drive away but ultimately crashed into a utility pole near the intersection of Live Oak and Cantegral streets, where he was pronounced dead at the scene by Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel. Notably, surveillance footage from the area has suggested that neither Brown nor Moncivais faced any immediate threat during the ordeal, raising questions about the necessity of discharging their firearms.

The circumstances surrounding the warrant being executed remain unclear, including the specific reasons for targeting Knowles and what offenses he was allegedly involved in. Additionally, it has been reported that Moncivais did not wear any identifying clothing marking him as a bounty hunter, while Brown was seen in a vest labeled “warrant services.”

Both suspects have been taken into custody at the Dallas County jail. Moncivais is being held on a bond set at $500,000, while the bond amount for Brown has not yet been specified. Authorities have confirmed that their investigation is ongoing, and they have encouraged anyone with additional information regarding the case or the events leading up to the shooting to reach out.

This incident poses serious implications regarding the actions of bounty hunters and the use of firearms in such operations, prompting further discourse on law enforcement and private investigative practices. The shooting and subsequent charges have raised alarm among local residents and advocacy groups, who continue to seek clarity and accountability in the case.

As the investigation continues, Dallas police are emphasizing the importance of community input in resolving this matter. The fatalities tied to this shooting are a reminder of the often unpredictable and dangerous nature of law enforcement activities, regardless of the individuals involved.
