Dallas, Texas, welcomed more than 25,000 attendees to the 29th Annual Mayor’s Back-to-School Fair held in Fair Park. This annual event, which aims to support students from economically disadvantaged families, provided crucial resources as they prepare for the upcoming school year.
The fair was officially launched by Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, who expressed his commitment to aiding students and families in need. Nearly 13,000 students from approximately 5,800 families were expected to benefit from an array of free school supplies, backpacks, and various services offered by around 200 vendors.
The event featured numerous initiatives to promote students’ health and confidence. Volunteer dentist services were provided for children in a fun environment, helping make dental care approachable and engaging. In addition, many students received free haircuts from volunteer stylists, contributing to their self-esteem and overall readiness for the school year ahead.
The backbone of the fair was strong community support, including contributions from the city of Dallas, which supplied the backpacks. Walmart offered eye exams, while Baylor Scott & White provided kidney screenings. Parkland Health participated by conducting immunizations, ensuring that students are healthy heading into the school year. Additionally, Coca-Cola donated 200 laptops, enhancing students’ access to technology and learning resources.
This year’s fair thrived thanks to the efforts of over 200 volunteers who dedicated their time to ensure a successful event. Volunteers shared their joy as they saw children excited and hopeful as they prepared to head back to school. The fair also served as a platform to address the ongoing challenges that families face in securing necessary items for their children’s education.
