Corsicana – A 17-year-old pregnant teen named Malaina is showing signs of improvement following a tragic shooting incident that occurred over Memorial Day weekend. Malaina, who is six months pregnant with a boy, was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot on Saturday during a family cookout in the 400 block of South 31st Street.
After the shooting, Malaina was initially taken to Navarro Regional Hospital before being transferred to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, where she was placed in the intensive care unit. In the days following the incident, her mother, Gabby Gonzales, reported that Malaina is making progress in her recovery. She can now sit up, eat, and speak a little, much to the relief of her family.
The shooting incident has raised significant concerns in the community. Witnesses described seeing two males in hoodies pacing in front of their home just before the gunfire erupted. Malaina sustained critical injuries when she was shot in the back; the bullet exited through the front of her stomach, narrowly missing her unborn child. Gonzales has expressed deep concern regarding the nature of the attack, believing it may have been targeted. She is actively pleading for justice and answers from law enforcement.
In response to the shooting, Corsicana police are undertaking a thorough investigation, which includes seeking surveillance footage from nearby homes as well as collecting forensic evidence from the scene.
