Dallas, Texas – Phillip Gene Hudson, a vibrant community leader and family man, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and dedication. Born on January 26, 1945, to Albert Gene Hudson and Mary Elizabeth Mansfield, he was celebrated for his larger-than-life personality that resonated deeply within the community.

Phillip Hudson was remembered for his powerful, beautiful voice that could move souls, while his laughter was known to be contagious, drawing people into his warm embrace. Family was paramount to Hudson, with gatherings filled with storytelling, singing, praying, dancing, and joking, showcasing the joy he brought to those around him. He referred to younger generations as children of “the promise,” a phrase that honored a legacy passed down through his family since his grandfather, Rev. William Curtis Mansfield.

In the realm of sports, Phillip was an avid fan and was particularly engaged in baseball. He took on the role of president of a national championship little league baseball team in Gary, Indiana, and played a crucial role in establishing the first girls’ little league softball team in the region. His enthusiasm for sports extended to football, basketball, and later, tennis, where he followed the careers of Venus and Serena Williams. Notably, Phillip was a fixture in local bowling leagues in Dallas, earning numerous accolades and trophies for his participation.

Known as the loudest parent in the bleachers, Hudson encouraged his children to pursue sports passionately. In addition to athletics, he had a strong appreciation for movies, music, and literature, along with a love for games like Scrabble, Bid Whist, and Gin Rummy. His Saturday mornings set to the sounds of jazz during cleaning sessions were famously loud enough to be heard by neighbors, demonstrating his vibrant approach to life.

A calling to ministry was evident early in Phillip’s life; he gave his life to Christ as a young boy and began preaching as a teenager. After graduating from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, he moved to Texas for college, enrolling at Bishop College on a scholarship. There, he excelled academically, making the Dean’s List and serving as president of the freshman class. He also contributed to the student newspaper and sang in the choir.

Hudson earned a bachelor’s degree in religion and furthered his education with a master’s degree in theology from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. He also obtained a master’s degree in public administration from SMU. For over twenty years, he served as a United Methodist minister in the North Texas Conference and provided spiritual guidance as a chaplain at Parkland and Methodist Hospitals in Dallas. His career also included teaching and administrative roles within the Dallas Independent School District, where he held various certifications.

After retiring from service in the United Methodist Church and the Fort Worth Independent School District, Hudson joined Highland Hills United Methodist Church, continuing his dedication to ministry as part of the pastoral team.

Phillip Gene Hudson was preceded in death by his mother, father, and sister, Stephanie (“Oozie”) Williams. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marie (“Celeste”), four daughters, ten grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren, all carrying forward his legacy. His family, including dear sisters, aunts, an uncle, and an extended network of friends, will remember him fondly as a charismatic leader and devoted family man.
