Arlington

Black on the Block is returning to North Texas for its sixth iteration, bringing more than 150 Black-owned vendors, live performances, DJs and food to Globe Life Field’s Lot Q in Arlington on Sunday, October 26, from 1 PM to 7 PM. The festival was created in 2021 by sisters Char and Lanie Edwards and aims to amplify Black-owned businesses and celebrate Black culture. Tickets start at $20.

Key details

The event will feature over 150 Black-owned vendors offering food, retail and services. The festival will be hosted by Jazzi Black, a radio personality from 97.9 The Beat. Attendees can expect music and dancing, with DJs Phenom, Honey, Kenny Lofton, and Rooty Red scheduled to perform and hip-hop artist Foggieraw performing live.

The festival returns to the Dallas–Fort Worth area after previous events in cities including Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. Due to high local demand, the organizers chose Dallas as a primary expansion market and now hold the festival there twice a year. The event has grown enough to require larger venues, prompting a move from EpicCentral Grand Lawn in Grand Prairie to Globe Life Field, chosen for its capacity to handle large crowds and parking needs.

Attendance, sales and past performance

BOTB has demonstrated strong ticket and vendor performance in prior iterations. In April 2023, the festival sold out 3,300 tickets at its first event held at the Sports Academy at The Star in Frisco. Vendors have reported substantial sales at past events, with one food vendor reporting $14,000 in one day in sales. The festival’s popularity in Dallas has grown to the point that Dallas has become one of BOTB’s largest markets, reportedly surpassing Los Angeles.

Growth and partnerships

The organizers have responded to demand with increased frequency and geographic reach. BOTB announced a partnership with Live Nation Urban to expand to more cities, with plans that include international events in London and Canada. The festival’s expansion follows follower feedback that identified Dallas as the top choice for additional events.

Origins and programming

The festival was created in 2021 by sisters Char and Lanie Edwards. The concept for BOTB emerged after Char Edwards experienced being the only Black vendor at an event in Los Angeles, motivating the sisters to create an event that centers Black business ownership and creativity. BOTB has also drawn celebrity attendance in past events, including appearances by Chance the Rapper, Tinashe, Keke Palmer, Omarion and Romeo Miller.

In addition to the main festival, the Edwards sisters have launched related programming such as Wellness Fest, an immersive fashion show and a local music showcase. The family remains closely involved in operations, with their mother serving as CFO and their father managing the merchandise booth. While the sisters remain heavily involved in BOTB, they plan to eventually return to their individual fashion pursuits.
