Elmhurst, Illinois – Three Texas men have been arrested in connection with a bank theft method known as “jugging” that occurred in Elmhurst, Illinois. The suspects, identified as 27-year-old Jamond D. Johnson from Windemere, Texas, 24-year-old Jontrey R. Houston from Houston, Texas, and 24-year-old Anthony D. Mackintrush from Dallas, Texas, were taken into custody following a series of incidents linked to vehicle burglaries.
The Elmhurst Police Department reported the incident, which unfolded on May 29 at around 10 a.m. A 911 call alerted police to a vehicle burglary in a parking lot. A witness notified authorities that they saw a man break the window of a parked car before entering a gray SUV that subsequently drove away from the scene. At the time of the burglary, the owner of the broken-into vehicle had just withdrawn cash from a nearby bank and left the money in his locked car.
Surveillance footage revealed that the gray SUV was parked next to the victim’s car while they were inside the bank. This mutual presence hinted at premeditated theft, a hallmark of jugging incidents, where criminals closely observe their targets after they withdraw money.
Later in the day, around 1 p.m., officers received reports that the same gray SUV had been involved in another vehicle burglary and was seen heading west on the expressway. Elmhurst officers acted quickly and located the vehicle parked in a disabled spot outside a Wells Fargo Bank at approximately 1:25 p.m. The police detained the three suspects who were found inside the SUV.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered a series of incriminating items including a metal window punch, cash believed to be stolen, cannabis, and a pill containing a controlled substance. These findings led to various charges against each suspect. Jamond D. Johnson is facing charges of burglary of a motor vehicle, theft, and unlawful possession of cannabis. Jontrey R. Houston has been charged with burglary of a motor vehicle, theft, improper use of registration, and unauthorized use of handicapped parking. Anthony D. Mackintrush is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
All three suspects have been booked into the DuPage County Jail, where they await further legal proceedings. The police emphasized that the quick response and subsequent arrest of the suspects were significantly aided by public safety cameras in the area, which captured the key events surrounding the jugging incident.
Jugging, the crime tactic involved in this case, typically involves criminals watching individuals as they withdraw cash from ATMs or banks and then following them to steal their money. This method has become a growing concern in various communities, prompting law enforcement to encourage citizens to remain vigilant after making cash withdrawals.
The Elmhurst Police Department continues to remind residents to stay alert and report suspicious activity, stressing the effectiveness of community cooperation in preventing such crimes. The incident has underscored the critical role of surveillance in enhancing public safety, leading to the apprehension of criminals engaged in such deceptive practices.
As the legal process unfolds, authorities in Elmhurst remain dedicated to maintaining a safe environment for all citizens and working tirelessly to combat crime in the area.
