I-30 Reopens After Weekend Canyon Closure in Dallas

DALLAS, Texas — Drivers heading into downtown Dallas on Monday morning were due to get Interstate 30 back after a full weekend shutdown, with both directions scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26.

Starting at 10 p.m. Saturday, crews blocked all lanes in both directions from the I-35E interchange east to I-45 and U.S. 75. The Texas Department of Transportation sent traffic onto Woodall Rodgers Freeway, State Highway 366, as the signed detour linking the two interstates, and warned that other routes could add miles to a trip.

The shutdown is one piece of the $888 million I-30 Canyon corridor project, a long rebuild of the sunken stretch of highway along the south edge of downtown. The state expects the work to wrap up in 2031, weather permitting.

The rebuild stretches 2.3 miles across the south side of downtown. Plans call for the main lanes to grow from six to 12, with longer merge areas between the interchanges so drivers have more room to change lanes. Work began in January 2026, and Balfour Beatty Infrastructure holds the contract. The state projects about 234,500 vehicles a day on the corridor by 2045.

Getting the main lanes back does not end the detours on nearby streets. Crews expect to keep Botham Jean/Lamar Boulevard shut where it meets the interstate until late 2027. Cesar Chavez Boulevard stays blocked at the highway until late 2028, and Akard Street until summer 2028. Cadiz Street is closed while workers build it on a new path, and Good Latimer Expressway runs with a single lane each way until early 2028.

State planners say the new cross streets will be safer for people on foot or on bikes and will reconnect neighborhoods split by the canyon. Rail crossings used by DART and freight lines are also part of the work.

Pedestrians are not allowed inside the closed work zones, and the state asks drivers to watch for slowed or stopped traffic near crews. Current lane and ramp closures are posted on DriveTexas.org.
