News Summary
Powerful storms swept through North Texas early Monday, causing over 31,000 power outages, particularly in Tarrant and Dallas counties. The storms led to disruptions, including flight delays at local airports, house fires from lightning strikes, and emergency rescues from floodwaters. Although the immediate severe weather has subsided, further thunderstorms are predicted. As recovery efforts begin, Oncor energy crews are working to restore power, with rising temperatures anticipated throughout the week, reminding residents of the unpredictable nature of weather in the region.
North Texas has been left reeling after powerful storms swept through the region early Monday morning, causing widespread power outages and significant disruptions. More than 31,000 residents and businesses found themselves without electricity as the storms wreaked havoc, particularly in Tarrant and Dallas counties.
According to Oncor, the energy provider, the majority of power outages were concentrated in these two counties, with Dallas County alone reporting 13,357 outages. Other areas significantly affected included Tarrant County with 10,407 outages, Johnson County with 1,336, and McLennan County experiencing 1,126 outages. Smaller outages were reported in various counties, but the bulk of the disruptions impacted urban centers.
The National Weather Service has indicated that all Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for the North Texas area have now expired. Although the immediate threat from severe storms has passed, additional thunderstorms and strong winds are still forecasted, particularly south of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. However, as the weather system moves through, most rain is expected to clear the area by 11 a.m., paving the way for dry conditions by noon. Following these storms, the region is looking at high temperatures reaching the low 90s.
Despite the storms’ quick movement, they left behind notable incidents. A lightning strike was responsible for igniting a house fire in the 1500 block of Pierce Street shortly after 6:30 a.m., as reported by the Waxahachie Fire Department. Emergency crews also had to rescue a woman from her vehicle as floodwaters quickly engulfed her car in Northeast Dallas.
Widespread flight delays and cancellations were another consequence of the severe weather. Both DFW Airport and Dallas Love Field Airport experienced a temporary ground stop, with DFW Airport facing the brunt of disruptions. On Sunday afternoon, the airport recorded 80 total delays and 59 cancellations. Love Field Airport reported 22 delays and one cancellation. The ground stop is expected to be lifted around 10 a.m.
As the region begins to recover from these storms, Oncor has announced that its crews are actively responding to power outages as safety and weather conditions allow. Residents who remain without power are urged to stay informed about restoration efforts and updates.
Looking ahead, the forecast calls for rising temperatures throughout the week. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to see highs in the mid to upper 90s, with temperatures potentially nearing the 100-degree mark on Thursday and Friday. Residents are encouraged to take necessary precautions in anticipation of the upcoming heatwave.
This storm event serves as a timely reminder of the unpredictable nature of North Texas weather and the impact it can have on daily life. Local authorities and energy providers are working diligently to restore services and ensure the safety of all residents as the community recovers.
