Born on May 20, 1927, in Calvert, Texas, Virginia was the daughter of Miguel and Narcisa Gonzalez and was one of seven siblings. Her upbringing in a loving household shaped her values and commitment to her family.
Virginia graduated from Crozier Technical High School in Dallas, where she obtained training in secretarial work and accounting. Her pursuit of education did not end there; she furthered her studies through night courses at Southern Methodist University, Richland College, and Brookhaven College, adapting to changing technologies by taking computer courses when they were first introduced.
In June 1947, Virginia married Elias (Eli) Vargas Aguilar, and together they had two children: Robert Aguilar and Yvonne (Aguilar) Johanson. After Eli’s passing, she married Paul L. Gonzalez in March 1990, remaining together until February 1999. Her final marriage was to Milton Johanson in May 2001, which lasted until his passing in July 2018.
An individual of remarkable dedication, Virginia spent over 33 years at the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce, where she eventually retired as Vice President of Finances. Her leadership extended beyond her professional life; she became involved in parliamentary procedure and was a member of the National Association of Parliamentarians. Notably, she was the first Mexican-American to serve as President of the Texas State Association of Parliamentarians from 1993 to 1994.
Virginia was also an active participant in organizations such as Toastmistress, where she dedicated over 35 years, ultimately serving as Chairman (President). Her passion for education manifested in her volunteer work, where she taught English through the English Learning Program at the Presbyterian Church.
In her retirement, Virginia participated in activities at the Farmers Branch Senior Citizen Center and was a member of the Garden Club, where she shared her love for gardening and community involvement. Virginia treasured family gatherings, particularly 4th of July celebrations at Lake Viking, Missouri, which became a cherished tradition for 30 years. She was known for her home-cooked meals and for hosting numerous family events, providing a warm and welcoming environment for her loved ones.
Virginia enjoyed traveling extensively, visiting countries such as Spain, Italy, Mexico, and Australia, thanks to her son, a pilot who facilitated many of her adventures across the United States and beyond. She had a home in Dallas, purchased in February 1962 for $18,000, which served as a foundation for her family life and gatherings.
Virginia is survived by her sister, Margaret Martinez; her son, Robert Aguilar (June); her daughter, Yvonne Johanson (Tom); and her legacy continues through her four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Virginia Aguilar will be remembered for her significant impact on family and community, having touched countless lives throughout her journey. A visitation is scheduled for July 16, 2025, with funeral services to follow on July 17, 2025, at Sparkman Funeral Home in Richardson, Texas.
