Flooded streets in North Texas after heavy rain

News Summary

North Texas experienced significant flooding and traffic disruptions due to a slow-moving weather system bringing heavy rainfall. Areas in Dallas, Collin, Rockwall, and Tarrant counties faced multiple flood warnings, with 1-2 inches of rain leading to gridlock on major roadways during rush hour. The heavy rain postponed a concert scheduled at Dos Equis Pavilion, which will now take place the following day. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and informed about ongoing weather updates.

Dallas, Texas – A slow-moving weather system brought heavy rainfall to parts of North Texas on Tuesday evening, leading to significant flooding and traffic disruptions. The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for Dallas, Collin, and Rockwall counties, which remained in effect until 9 p.m., with the potential for urban and small stream flooding due to the heavy downpour.

By 6:15 p.m., northern Dallas County had already received 1-2 inches of rain, prompting a flash flood warning that remained in effect until 8:15 p.m. Areas in southern Dallas County, including Duncanville, DeSoto, and Cedar Hill, were also initially under a flash flood warning, which was later lifted as the storm cells weakened. However, additional rainfall of another 1-2 inches was still anticipated in the affected areas.

In addition to Dallas County, parts of Tarrant County, including Arlington, were also under a flash flood warning, which remained active until 11 p.m.

Traffic Disruptions and Flood Reports

The heavy rainfall coincided with rush hour, leading to gridlock on major roadways, notably the Dallas North Tollway. Flooding was reported during peak traffic periods, affecting many commuters. Multiple vehicles stalled in high standing water at key intersections, with some motorists encountering significant challenges navigating flooded roadways.

An SUV was reported stranded at Lake June Road and Highway 175, requiring towing due to muddy debris water, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. Additional flooding was observed in Mesquite, particularly near Military Parkway and Rodeo Center Boulevard, as the rain continued to create hazardous conditions for drivers across the region.

Concert Delay

Officials at Dos Equis Pavilion announced delays for concertgoers attending Kesha’s performance, which was originally scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Fans were advised to seek shelter either inside the venue or in their vehicles until the storm subsided. As a result of the severe weather, the concert has been rescheduled for Wednesday.

Rainfall Totals and Future Forecast

The rainfall amounts from this storm are expected to represent some of the highest totals recorded in North Texas for the month. Forecasts suggested that DFW International Airport could see totals nearing an inch of water. Although the chance of rain was predicted to decrease Tuesday night, it is expected to rise again by Wednesday afternoon.

As the rain clears, temperatures are forecast to remain in the lower 90s on both Tuesday and Wednesday, with conditions warming up to about 95 degrees by Thursday. The extended forecast indicates a return to hot weather, with a 20% chance of thunderstorms in the area on Saturday, alongside temperatures projected to remain around 95 degrees.

Conclusion

The impact of the heavy rain on Tuesday evening serves as a reminder of the potential hazards posed by sudden weather changes. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and take precautions during storms to ensure their safety.
