DALLAS, Texas — Close to one in four registered voters in Dallas County, Texas, has already voted in person in the midterm election. When polls closed Oct. 25 at the end of the first week of early voting, 358,751 ballots had been cast at county sites, Dallas County Elections Department figures show.

That works out to roughly 23.96% of the county’s registered voters, a pool of close to 1.5 million people. On top of the in-person count, 16,279 mail ballots came in between Oct. 19 and Oct. 24.

The week started with a surge. Opening day drew 76,075 voters, beating the county’s first-day record by nearly 35%. The old mark, 56,431, was set when early voting opened for the 2024 presidential election. Daily numbers tapered as the week went on, and Friday, Oct. 23, was the lightest day at 19,180. Next door, Tarrant County counted 323,544 votes over the same week.

For comparison, about 391,328 Dallas County residents took part in early voting across the whole 2022 midterm period, so this year’s first week alone has already covered more than nine-tenths of that figure, with five more days of early voting left.

Statewide attention is high. The U.S. Senate contest pitting Attorney General Ken Paxton against Rep. James Talarico is among the most closely watched in the nation, and the county ballot includes a proposed tax increase aimed at homelessness.

Early voting runs through Friday, Oct. 30, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at any of 84 county early voting sites. Once Election Day arrives on Nov. 3, the county will open 444 polling places.
