DALLAS, Texas — Drivers who use Interstate 30 through downtown Dallas will lose the route for most of the weekend, as the Texas Department of Transportation shuts every lane in both directions on the stretch from I-35E to the I-45/US 75 junction.

The full closure starts at 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, and is set to end at 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26. State crews will post detour signs pointing east-west traffic to SH 366, the Woodall Rodgers Freeway, and transportation officials are telling motorists to expect heavy delays and skip trips through the area when they can. Anyone heading to events downtown Saturday night or Sunday should build in extra time.

The shutdown is part of the I-30 Canyon rebuild, an $888 million reconstruction of the sunken stretch of highway on the south edge of downtown. The state expects the overall project to wrap up in 2031, so weekend closures like this one are likely to return as crews reach new phases of the work.

Several cross streets near the freeway are already affected. Botham Jean/Lamar Boulevard stays shut with a posted detour at the interstate until late 2027. Cesar Chavez Boulevard is blocked at the highway until late 2028, and Akard Street is blocked there until the summer of 2028. Good Latimer Expressway carries just one lane each way at the freeway until early 2028, Griffin carries one lane each way on the same timeline, and Canton Street is shut from Akard Street to Griffin Street with no reopening date set. Cadiz Street is closed too and will come back on a new alignment.

Upcoming lane and ramp closures for the project are posted on DriveTexas.org as they are scheduled. Walkers are not allowed inside the closed work zones, and the state is asking drivers to put phones down, follow posted speed limits and watch for slower traffic and crews near the work.
